Expressive Ballet

This expressive editorial layout focused on expressing what the article is about through design decisions. A circular grid system is used to allow the typography to express movement like the dancers in the photographs. This is eye-catching and develops interest to viewers as it is a unique grid and connects the two elements. The typography incorporates shadows, layers, and fade outs to relate back to the images and draw viewer’s into the topic of the interview. The layout was printed off and then painted on with a purple and silver metallic paint which was then scanned back in to add an analog technique. This layer creates more of the blur and mirror effect on the spreads. The colour palette is taken from colours within Elizaveta Porodina’s photographs of the New York Ballet dancers.

Aabak Swash captures the movement and flow that the dancer’s display in the photographs. This typeface blends into the blur effects  the photography displays and works to show the expression dance creates.

Degular Display is used for the body text as it is bold and has stiff lines. It allows for legibility of the text while still being able to showcase motion.
